Let me state, first, that I have no undisclosed interest in Oberwerk Corporation or its products and every binocular mentioned in this review article was purchased through normal channels. In February 2003, I happened upon a website, bigbinoculars.com, that detailed literally scores of relatively low-cost binoculars distributed by Oberwerk Corporation in Xenia, Ohio. I commend Oberwerk for their very detailed, colorful and picturesque showcasing of their binocular products which range from 40mm to 150mm in objective diameters. I called up Kevin Busarow, president of Oberwerk, on his toll free number and received plenty of helpful/informative information.

The Binocular Site Oberwerk Oberwerk Giant Binoculars Oberwerk Giant binoculars are an exceptional choice for both astronomical viewing and for long-range terrestrial observation. They are particularly effective in low light conditions because the giant lenses gather a large amount of light and maintain a high level of contrast. The high quality, multi-coated lenses offer sharp views and excellent color correction. With their lightweight rubber-armored bodies, they're easy to carry yet stand up to heavy use in all kinds of environments. Some models have soft, fold-down eyecups that will easily accommodate eyeglass wearers.
Oberwerk binoculars feature highest-quality BAK4 prisms and quality multi-coatings. For answers to your questions about coatings just look under the heading of Techincal questions. http://www.bigbinoculars.com/faq.htm Most inexpensive binoculars are not sharp to the edge, one exception that I am aware of is the Pentax PCF WP II series of binoculars which have aspherical eyepiece elements that really work. I would recommend the 12x50 PCF WP II. http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-65809-12x50-Waterproof-Binocular/dp/B00076QVZ0 PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR PENTAX http://www.cloudynights.com/documents/nikon.pdf If you are interested in the Oberwerk binoculars I would recommend that you purchase them directly from their website. http://www.bigbinoculars.com/1570.htm From the reviews that I have read, Oberwerk offers different models which are higher in overall quality.

The Giant 20x80 binoculars are probably the best buy in the Oberwerk line. Giant 80mm objectives have a serious amount of light grasp, yet they weigh just 3.6 lbs! These binoculars are fabulous for astronomy when used with a tripod, and light enough to be hand-held for terrestrial usage, such as wildlife observation and surveillance. Low-reflection broadband multicoating is used on every air-to-glass surface, including prisms - an Oberwerk - exclusive feature not found on any competitor's 20x80mm. Light loss due to reflection and scattering is minimized, providing the highest level of light transmission possible.
The Giant 11x70 binoculars are ideal for astronomy. They are also excellent for nautical applications, wildlife observation, and surveillance. The new low-reflection broadband multi-coating has a subtle green/purple color, and is applied to every air-to-glass surface.
